Acoustical Quality Control of Workpieces
Industrial production is always closely connected to quality
control. Already in the production process it has to be guaranteed
that only best quality products leave the factory. Until now,
the common test scenarios for the quality of rooftiles involved
a sound check which is usually done by sorters. Using the example of roofing tiles, the Fraunhofer
IDMT developed a method for the automated acoustical quality testing of workpieces.

Activation of Cochlea Implants
Millions of people are handicapped by severe hearing loss
or deafness. Electronic inner ear prostheses, so called cochlea
implants, which substitute the function of the damaged inner
ear, can improve the quality of life significantly. Thereby,
the activation of the implants plays a decisive role for speech
comprehension. The newly developed simulation software, based
on a neurophysiological approach, achieves a better activation
of electrodes for cochlea implants.

Beat Tracking
The synchronization of multimedia content to musical signals
often has real-time requirements. Thereby, the determination
of the temporal positions of beats in a piece of music is
of major importance. For this purpose, Fraunhofer IDMT developed
the so called Beat Tracking for the synchronization of any
audio and video software via a MIDI interface.

EDMedia
Merging of recent findings in the areas of information and
communications technology, web-based learning, cognition and
user-centred system development efficiently supports online
learning. Simultaneously, this integration can powerfully
increase the learner's motivation and improve human learning.
Enhanced concepts of use and interaction are the basis for
success due to addressing the aspects of human recognition,
user acceptance and useful application.

Freebies
The music fans of today buy their albums less and less in
music stores – they rather simply recommend music to each
other and exchange files or CDs. This exchange of music happens
unfortunately mostly illegal. With the development of Freebies,
online sales could be increased and negative effects on the
music industry could be restricted.

Spatial Mixing Desk
Professional audio technology requires the correct acoustic
perspective of sound perception. This calls for a sound system
which enables a perfect directional hearing and distance perception
for the listener. In close collaboration with Bregenz Festival
and Lawo AG, Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology
developed a new spatial audio mixing desk. The system was
optimized for both static and dynamic sound sources and represents
the state-of-the-art of directional hearing.
