Media Distribution and Security

More and more business transactions are processed via the Internet. Digital content is distributed online, transactions are managed and sensitive information are exchanged. The development and realization of business models for secure, user-friendly and technically efficient distribution of virtual goods – e.g. MP3-files – is the emphasis in the business area "Media Distribution and Security".

Audio Coding for Special Applications

Since the early stage of digital audio technology, researchers strive to compress the data ratio of multi-media based content. High memory requirements of uncompressed data, limited transfer rates in digital broadcast and the transmission of audio signals via Internet required a radical "slimming cure" of the signals. In collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS in Erlangen, the Fraunhofer IDMT works on both perceptual coding and lossless coding in order to reach an optimum of compression and audio quality.

Bio-inspired Computing

Research activities in the business area Bio-inspired Computing at the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology IDMT focus on the creation of neuromorphic aural models simulating the neurophysiology of human hearing. Moreover, the gained experiences in the field of medical audio technology will be applied for – and combined with – video.

Data Representation and Interfaces

Nowadays, numerous technologically based environments and approaches exist, that address non-linear viewing and presentation of multimedia information in knowledge, content and learning management systems. The problem is that developments frequently lack the context and preparation to make effective use of new techniques targeted to the real involvement of user-centred technologies. Current knowledge management systems focus on knowledge acquisition, storage, retrieval and maintenance, and E-Learning systems are often static and fail to facilitate the development and sharing of knowledge.

Authoring Systems

Development of brand-new multimedia applications and services requires to master the complete digital chain from production, via distribution to consumption.
Therefore several methods and schemes from diverse areas are being utilized, such as from TV production, computer graphics, multimedia, communication and broadcast engineering. Especially the interfaces between these areas make great demands on authoring and relevant authoring tools and systems.
