Acoustics
For the future of sound reproduction it becomes more and more
important to create natural and realistic sound. Research
in the business area "Acoustics" focuses on creating
natural surround sound environments.

Semantic Music Technologies
The Metadata business area addresses methods for automatic
recognition and characterization of multimedia data. In this
context, the automated generation of content based features
inherent to audio visual signals provides successful and reliable
retrieval using suitable search engines.

Audio-visual Systems
Be it the media archive of a TV station or the personal photo collection on your computer – large assortments of media pose one challenge: pictures, videos or audio files can only be found on by means of the given filename or manually assigned keywords. The researchers in the field of Semantic Audio-Visual Systems carry out the development of technologies and methods for automated content based description of video signals to facilitate the recognition, search and processing of multimedia data.

Media Distribution and Security
More and more business transactions are processed via the
Internet. Digital content is distributed online, transactions
are managed and sensitive information are exchanged. The development
and realization of business models for secure, user-friendly
and technically efficient distribution of virtual goods –
e.g. MP3-files – is the emphasis in the business area "Media
Distribution and Security".

Audio Coding for Special Applications
Since the early stage of digital audio technology, researchers
strive to compress the data ratio of multi-media based content.
High memory requirements of uncompressed data, limited transfer
rates in digital broadcast and the transmission of audio signals
via Internet required a radical "slimming cure"
of the signals. In collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institute
for Integrated Circuits IIS in Erlangen, the Fraunhofer IDMT
works on both perceptual coding and lossless coding in order
to reach an optimum of compression and audio quality.

Bio-inspired Computing
Research activities in the business area Bio-inspired Computing at the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media
Technology IDMT focus on the creation of neuromorphic aural
models simulating the neurophysiology of human hearing. Moreover,
the gained experiences in the field of medical audio technology
will be applied for and combined with video.

Data Representation and Interfaces
Recent technology-based learning and working environments are frequently engineered in a manner that provides only a relatively static experience. This often appears as a barrier to effectively exchange data and metadata, to sustainably manage archiving in repositories, and digital preservation as well as to accomplish efficient networking. Today, those user-friendly networked learning and working environments are essential that allow for managing individual concepts, and for structuring and delivery of digital content. Additionally, these environments need to reflect on the existent and the necessary competencies of the users, and also on the individual preferences in an organizational framework.
